Jean-Gabriel Domergue (1889-1962) was a French painter specialising in portraits of Parisian women.
Domergue was born in Bordeaux. Jean-Gabriel Domergue was fond of drawing since childhood. He studied at the Lyceum of art in Bordeaux, then at the Lycee Rollin and at the School of fine arts in Paris. He received his first prize at the age of 14 for a drawing submitted to a competition at the Paris salon. At the same time, he completed his first order: a friend of his mother asked him to draw her portrait. The customer turned out to be a distant relative of Toulouse Lautrec, and this portrait served as an introduction to the famous artist, who immediately appreciated the outstanding abilities of the young man. Domergue would later take lessons at Lautrec's Studio. His work was also influenced by Degas, whom Domergue also met by chance, renting a Studio on the floor above Degas ' workshop. In 1911, he won the Rome prize. Since the 20s of the XX century, he focused on portraits. He is considered the founder of pin-up. Domergue also designed clothes for couturier Paul Poiret.
In 1927, Domergue bought a luxury Villa in Cannes, Villa Fiesole, which He bequeathed to the city.
In 1938, he was a member of the jury of the Miss France pageant. In 1939, he created a poster for the debut Cannes film festival, which was interrupted in September 1939 due to the outbreak of world war II and General mobilization.
From 1955 to 1962, he was curator of the Jacmar-Andre Museum, organizing exhibitions of works by Van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Francisco Goya and others. Domergue was appointed a knight of the Legion of Honor. He died on November 16, 1962 on a street in Paris.
