WALTER ERNEST WEBSTER

WALTER ERNEST WEBSTER was born in Manchester and studied at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy. Webster lived in London. His paintings were exhibited in many big British artistic institutions like the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Artists, Art Societies and the Paris Salon where he was awarded bronze, silver and gold medals in 1931.

Webster was a successful portrait painter and illustrator. He dedicated many of his paintings to ballet, music and theatre. Webster’s creative activity took place in London and Paris during Sergey Dyaghilev’s Ballets Russes. This was the time when the British national ballet came into being with participation of Ninette de Valois, Marie Rambert, Tamara Karsavina and other participants of the Ballets Russes. The artist was inspired by ballet and paid much attention to ballet in his creative work.

We can see Webster’s paintings in many public collections including the Walker Art Gallery, the Gallery Oldham, the Paisley Museum, other art galleries and the Governmental Art Collection which has a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II painted by Webster.
